Finland Mordançage

I spent the month of March doing the Silence Awareness Existence residency at Arteles Creative Center in Finland. I photographed the winter landscape and have been working in the darkroom this past month to make Mordançage prints of the images. Here is some of my progress so far (including side trips to Iceland and Estonia!).

Over the past couple months, I have been experimenting with the Mordançage process. Here are some of my first tests. More work to come in 2018 with an upcoming trip to Finland!

The Dissolving Landscape

I have recently returned from spending three weeks in Svalbard, participating in The Arctic Circle Residency, shooting altered film for my project The Dissolving Landscape. The film has been soaked in various acidic solutions to degrade it, speaking to the impending effects of global warming, as well as the changing medium of photography. I still have a lot more film to go through, but here is a preliminary selection.

Somewhere Strange at Roadside Attractions

If you are in Toronto, check out my installation Somewhere Strange in the window of Roadside Attractions at 911 Davenport Road. On until September 30th.

Somewhere Strange is a mosaic of postcards presented with a haiku poem, which reads as follows:

You are somewhere strange.
Do not be surprised if you
Sleep through the alarm.

The collection of postcards addresses the disparity between how spaces are represented and idealized, versus the visceral experience of passing through them. The haiku poem is meant to add another layer of meaning to the postcards, asking you to wonder about the nature of reality whilst looking at images from many different places. Together, these elements form a simple expression of the sublime strangeness of the world, where you may reflect on dreams, reality, familiarity and the unexpected.
